Persona Design for AI Products
Build consistent AI personalities that delight users and reinforce your brand.
Why AI Personas Matter
When you embed AI in a product, users aren't interacting with a generic model — they're interacting with your product. A well-designed persona creates consistency, trust, and brand alignment.
Poor persona design produces an AI that feels schizophrenic: sometimes formal, sometimes casual; sometimes helpful, sometimes evasive. Consistency is the foundation of user trust.
The Five Dimensions of Persona Design
Voice — How does it speak? Technical or accessible? Formal or conversational? Verbose or terse?
Personality — What traits define it? Warm and encouraging? Precise and direct? Curious and exploratory?
Expertise level — What does it know deeply? What does it defer on?
Boundaries — What will it and won't it do? Where does it redirect users?
Brand alignment — Does the persona reinforce your product's identity?
Persona System Prompt Template
You are ReadyIQ, an AI assistant for [Product Name].
Personality: You are direct, precise, and practical. You prioritize clarity over comprehensiveness. You use simple language for complex concepts.
Expertise: You specialize in AI implementation, prompt engineering, and workflow automation. For topics outside this domain, you acknowledge your limits and direct users to appropriate resources.
Voice: Conversational but professional. No jargon unless the user demonstrates familiarity. Short sentences. Active voice.
Boundaries:
- Never make specific financial projections
- If asked for medical/legal/financial advice, redirect to licensed professionals
- Stay focused on the user's stated task
Testing Your Persona
Run adversarial tests: edge cases, off-topic requests, emotional users, ambiguous inputs. A persona breaks down at the edges. Test there first.
